PC Watch Glass vs Mineral Glass: Why Polycarbonate Is Taking Over

Walk into any watch repair shop in Delhi and ask the technician what component breaks most often. The answer is the crystal — the transparent cover over the dial. For decades that meant mineral glass, cheap but brittle. Over the last ten years polycarbonate (PC) watch glass has steadily taken over the fashion and sports watch segment. Here's why.

Impact resistance — the killer feature

Polycarbonate is roughly 250 times stronger than mineral glass under impact. Drop a mineral-glass watch from chest height onto a hard floor and there's a real chance the crystal shatters. Drop a PC-glass watch from the same height and it bounces — sometimes with a surface scratch, rarely with a crack.

Light transmission

Good PC crystal delivers >89% light transmission, which is close enough to mineral (~92%) that the human eye can't tell the difference under normal lighting. On fashion watches where the dial carries a printed pattern, PC looks identical to mineral.

The downside: scratches

Bare PC is softer than mineral and scratches more easily. The fix is a hard coating applied after moulding. A good anti-scratch coating roughly doubles surface hardness and is now standard on mid-market sports watches. Without the coating, PC crystal looks foggy after 6 months of daily wear — with the coating, it holds up for years.

• Domed — higher-end look, slightly more complex tooling.
• Magnifier — raised section over the date window. Requires careful gate placement to avoid sink marks.
